Discovering Laos

Laos is an ancient country renowned for its magnificent countryside and the easy-going way of life. This mountainous land, bisected and bordered by the Mekong River is also home to many rare and endangered species of flora and fauna.

The dominant religion in Laos is Theravada Buddhism although other religions and beliefs do exist. Theravada Buddhism emphasises personal salvation and gaining good "karma". Briefly, this means doing and being good.

Lao cuisine is similar to Thai cuisine and, as in the other countries of SE Asia, revolves around rice. However, in Laos, this is "sticky rice" which is rolled into a small ball and eaten with the hand.

The population of Laos is an ethnic mix of around 6 million people. There are more than 49 officially recognised ethnic groups each with their distinctive way of life.
